I just did an oil change following the owners manual putting in 4.8 quarts. I put on a new Wix filter and it shows 1/2 way between the holes on the dip stick. Seems right on. I imagine 5 quarts will work fine but the Mobil 1 bottles make it easy to get it right. Just leave 8 oz of oil in the bottle on the window.

Need to bring this thread back into discussion. I did my oil change last night and noticed some oil beginning to collect on the lower portion of the oil pan, so I guess this seal is leaking again. I'm kind of upset because it was only replaced about 2 years ago. This seems like a very short time for a new seal to last.

I've been putting 5.5 qts in because that's what I read on the forums some time ago. I saw others in this thread also thought this was the right amount, but now I think it is way too much. Could this be what caused the pan seal to start leaking again so soon?

I want to start surveying around again to see how many quarts 430 members are currently using on an oil change with filter. I put 5 quarts in last night instead of my usual 5.5. I forgot to check the dipstick level after, but I will do that tonight! Also about to send in my oil analysis. Let's hope for the best.

5.5 qts. may be slightly on the high side, depending on year. (01 - 03 require slightly less oil according to some posters on this forum.) I always pour 5 qts. in, run the engine, wait overnight to check oil level, then top off as needed.

Any minor over-fill is not the cause of any pan gasket leak. Your oil leak is likely from a source higher than the oil pan, dripping down to the oil pan, possibly valve cover gaskets and/or cam seals.

Usually the way I do it. Put in 5 quarts, run it a little to let it warm up and circulate, then park it for a couple hours on an even surface and recheck. I normally add about another half quart, making the total about 5.5 quarts.

I have an '01 so yes, probably does have the 5 qt capacity.

The leak is definitely from the pan. There is no oil above the area where the pan meets the block.

Have always put 5.5 quarts in my 06 LS430 when doing oil and filter change. Bought my car used with 13k miles on it. I have done 16 diy oil changes to date. No oil leaks around the oil pan or anywhere else so far. 96k miles currently. I did tighten valve cover bolts recently as they were all pretty loose - like due to gasket compression and shrinkage over time.

I think it is very unlikely to cause oil pan gasket leak due to slight oil overfill.
