Oil Capacity - Service Manual
I have searched many threads and spoken to several dealer service or parts departments.
Oil capacity with filter change is still unclear. Does anyone have the factory service manual? I found a thread that says the service manual indicates capacity is 5.4 qts w/ filter change. That is consistent with the dealers I have spoken to that say the manual is incorrect and contains a misprint. They say that they bill out 6 qts. but it takes between 5.5 and 5.8. This makes sense as my '02 LS generally takes about 5.5. My '97 LS400 took 5.3 so the 4.8 listed in the LS430 owners manual seemed questionable.
If someone has a factory service manual and could confirm the listed capacity (maybe with a picture of the page), it would be great. Thank you.

The amount of oil that drains out of a crankcase can depend on car position (on ramps, on level ground, etc.), engine temperature (cold or hot), how long you let the old oil drip ... drip ... drip out.
I always fill an engine with oil until it's about half way between the dip stick full and add marks, let the engine idle for 5 minutes, let the car sit for an hour, check again, maybe add more oil, drive the car the next day, let the car sit for a while overnight, add more oil if necessary, etc., etc.
It's not an exact science if you want to keep from overfilling a crankcase which is what I've seen car dealers routinely do.

When lifting from the driver's side to access drainplug and filter, I allow it to drain in this position for about 10 minutes while I drain and switch out the filter. Refill w/ 4.5 qts and then turn the engine on then off to fill the filter puts me right between the holes on the dipstick. This is checked w/ the car level w/o waiting for oil to settle in the crankcase. If I waited for more oil to settle it would be closer the full hole on the dipstick.
I hate overfilling as it can make some cars sluggish and negatively impact gas mileage.

My toyota dealer charges me 11 bucks and cost of filter when I bring in my own 5 gal jub of vavoline synthetic. He always tells me to add another 1/2 quart but it reaches the fill line so it is fine to me. My LS at 5k oil changes moves like a 1/2 quart low maybe.

makes ya wonder about the the accuracy of the dip stick,,
with dry filter I have always used 6 quarts which puts me just above 1/2 way on the dip stick,, remains there until I change it at 7500,, is still very clean, using Mobil 1,,

Just bought my ls430 few weeks ago with a dealer oil change, instead of 5W30, they filled her with 5W20 from bulk and over fill a litter bit. Called them, was told 5W20 is good for Texas weather. Over fill a litter bit is not a issue. Prices is $60 before tax.

I think 5-30 would actually be better for super hot Texas weather. I know Toyota is recommending 0-20 on newer cars - likely primarily to increase MPG - but I am not sure super low viscosity 0-20 oil is great for maximizing engine life...might be fine for Northern locations that are cooler temp in summers.

Yep I also always changed my oil every 3k up until the latest 2 cars - 2007 Toyota HL and 2006 LS430. The oil change service interval for these cars says 5K so that is what I do now. I have made the switch to full synthetic oil, that makes me feel better about the longer change intervals. The LS430 take about 5.5 quarts to fill with new oil filter - oil just at the top dot on the dip stick. . The Toyota HL takes 5.0 quarts.

Who on god's earth that drives a Lexus wants to bring it in this often.
Tell them to use only Mobil1 Advanced Full Synthetic or Toyota Brand 0W20 synthetic ...... albeit at a premium cost ... and 10K intervals for oil changes.
Even a 2010 Camry I4 or a 2012 Camry V6 gets the 0W20 synthetic one year 10K miles whichever comes first.
