Default LS430 Pinging????

Okay all,

Hoping someone can help... I have a 2001 LS430 and always use Premium fuels. Lately, I have noticed a loss of power, and when cold (first start after sitting for a period) the engine seems a bit "rough" - that is, it makes a slight whining noise, I hear tapping sounds (obviously valves) and I feel the car "shimmy" a bit - all while at idle and the car in park.

Most annoyingly, when going up hills or inclines, if I remove my foot from the gas and start coasting or slowing, when I apply the gas again the engine pings for 2-3 seconds.

Does anyone else have this experience? I have spoken to the dealer regarding the loss of power and hesitation/shift issues and they claim it's the "drive-by-wire" system and normal. However, now that this problem has occurred, I'm wondering if it's all related and really NOT normal...

Any help is appreciated...thanks!

L

I don't think it's normal. Our new LS430 doesn't shake, ping or act strange even when it's cold (and believe me, it gets quite cold out here in the northeast.) Nor does it "ping" or act funny letting off, or stepping on the gas. Try a new dealership.

Ever since CA degraded their high-test 92 octane to tree-hugger / corn farmer oxygenated 91 octane gas, my '01 GS430 occasionally pings lightly. It only happens occasionally, under acceleration, around 3000 RPM. If the car weren't so darn quiet I probably wouldn't hear it.

A: It's never happened with Chevron gas... only with Shell so far.

B: I don't think it hurts the engine because the engine is supposed to have a knock detector and pull timing to compensate.
