Default Carfax Lesson

Never trust the reported in-service date. Purchased used 2008 IS250 at the end of March. Carfax reported the in-service date as April 28th, 2008. Just called to purchase an extended warranty and was going to take it in for some TSB fixes, nothing major.

In service date was actually April 11th. If my navigation goes south my rage will be increased about %5,000.

Why is this posted in the regional forum as well?

As I mentioned over there. Carfax isn't reliable. Accidents often not end up being reported in their either.

Before you buy a used car, take the VIN to the Lexus dealer, they will at least give you how the car was mechanically maintained and give you a report of EVERY time the car was in for service.

Most LEXUS service centers will be more than willing to help you if they feel you will bring the car in for service. Service advisors are on a bonus/commission.

As for CarFax, you are correct, some accidents don't show, depending on the fender bender and shop you have It repaired at.

I'm sorry but I've never heard of anyone blindly trusting the Carfax in-service date - frankly I didn't even know it listed one, which shows how much stock I'd put into that piece of information.

If you buy a used car and you're concerned about the warranty period for any reason (be it you want to get warranty work done before it's up, or you want to buy an extended warranty before it's up, etc) then you should call up your local Lexus dealer, provide your VIN, and have them tell you what your warranty period is in 30 seconds. You can probably also do this online, though I'd always double check it with a dealer.

So you thought the date of the end of your warranty was April 28 but it's actually April 11, and it's currently April 21? Did you even try talking to the dealer or Lexus? Call or go into your local dealer and tell them you bought the car used and wanted to buy an extended warranty but you were told by the dealer and Carfax the wrong in-service date and so you're 10 days late but didn't know it. I've heard of dealers selling extended warranties a few months out of warranty - I can't imagine you'll have any trouble getting one only ten days late. And just continue to stress that you just bought the car and were given wrong information (even though this isn't true and you should have done the homework). I bet the dealer has no problem selling you an extended warranty. If they don't do it, call the next dealer or call Lexus corporate.
