Offset Question

Offset Question
I'm probably gonna get flamed for this but I just picked up an 08 SPF IS-F and had a question about wheel fitment clearance with its brake system. I know the gist of offsets and was trying to research the answer but does anyone know if there is a magic number (i.e. +35) that would guarantee minimal clearance? thanks in advance

The wheel gurus will chip in - but I think the minimum offset is going to vary depending on the wheel and width.
The stock offset for 08-11 is +45 front and +55 rear. For 2012+ it is +51 rear..
For example, the 19"X 9" F sport wheels are +40 offset, but do not clear the rear brakes without a 5mm spacer.

As Vervish said. Certain wheel designs offer more clearance.
For example, an 18 x 9.5 +45 Enkei Rpf1 will not clear the Isf front brake (without a spacer), while the Pf01 of the same size will fit fine.
The sure bet is to test fit the rim before purchasing. What setup are you considering?
There's a "wheel fitment" thread somewhere.

There's not a real finite answer to the OP's question. What I can suggest would be research the exact wheel design that one wants. Obviously, test fitting would be ideal, but if one is buying new and potentially the wheels need to be custom built or shipped from say, Japan, test fitting won't be an option. I've had friends who purchased wheels specifically for their F, only to find out when they're first mounting it that it doesn't clear the calipers or require additional work (fenders, suspension, tire choice, ride height/wheel gap, etc.). And that's where the real trouble comes into play because it's one thing to have wheels that don't fit; it's another to try and unload them for the value you paid for.
To the OP- do you have a wheel design/manufacturer/model in mind? It would really help to narrow down choices and see what your options are in searching for new wheels.
Best of luck!

I have a similar question, but really am looking for recommendations from other members. I would like to get an 18" wheel for track days that is not going to cost me 500 / wheel. I'm getting an extra set because I'm worried about messing up my BBS wheels at the track and am tired of burning through my continentals after just two weekends. Net, open to ideas on a good 18x9 I can put on all four corners. Thanks!

i really like the stock look of the '12 and '13 BBS rims so i was looking at getting BBS CH R's for my SFP. had a feeling that each make/model of rims had some differences when i comes to offset fitment.

According to their German site there's only
19x8 +38 and 20x8,5 +38 available.
Maybe you get different sizes in the US.
Edit: in that case of design the lower the offset the better the brake clearance.
2 or 3 piece wheels are a whole different story

I had my eyes on those as well, but don't they come in weak sizes and offsets for 5x114.3?

Absolutely, I'm not sure, but as long as I know the CH-R is a wheel designed and manufactured in Germany.
We got strict laws specially when it comes to wheels, brakes and suspension.
So they need to get every size and offset tüv approved to sell it road legal.
Our domestic brands don't use 5x114,3 and it's not really common here. Only jap or us imports use them over here. So they don't put much effort in this pcd and that's also the reason that there are the most options at 5x112 because VAG and Mercedes uses this plattern.
You could use "adapter washers" to make 5x112 fit on 5x114,3 wich shouldn't be an option on a 400+ hp car or adapter spacers (recommends very high offsets around 60mm)
