I wear NO jewelry, including watches.

Anyway, enough other people have done it. I am satisfied that it is not a defect.

Same happened to me, it's from my jeans, jumped out of my car too quick and my hip grazed the sterring wheel. Happened about a year ago, hated myself when it happened then totally forgot about it and now can't even tell it's there.

I did the same thing to my wheel with my wedding ring. Its not worth replacing the wheel. Live with it for a month and it will go away on its own. Rub the leather with a tiny amount of chap stick at the scratch. When I say tiny, I mean rub your finger on the chapstick then rub the scratch. Use regular chapstick not that strawberry stuff my wife loves.

Hey. I had this same thing happen to my steering wheel as well. I took it into the dealer and brought it up and they replaced the steering wheel for me at no charge. Try taking it to your dealer!

I don't wear any jewelry. My nails are trimmed short as always. The only thing I can think of is my sun visor dragging across the wheel but even that is plastic and cloth.

Is this a defect or is it something I did somehow? Is there any good way to repair it or at least make the leather stay down and be smooth again?
I have done this in the past. My belt buckle scratched the wheel getting in and out. Either you or a service tech could have done this as well.

I don't think any kind of belt buckle is sharp enough to do this... I've done a light version of the damage above with my finger nails accidentally turning the steering wheel too aggressively without proper grip of the wheel

Every time I cut my nails I make it a habit to file them down smooth for this exact very reason. I know all it takes is one gash and the wheel is done and I have to stare at it forever. (i know this thread is old but just bumping the bump) hope this helps someone prevent damage.

I guess an update is due... It was rough at first but I found that over time the leather "healed" itself. No, not perfect but it became smooth and you couldn't really notice it like at first.

I did this to the bottom of my steering wheel. I had a pocket knife in my right pocket and upon exiting with the car still running, the pocket clip scraped the bottom of it. Now I am more careful if I get out while it is running, but don't have the issue ordinarily because the power adjusted steering wheel automatically moves up and out of the way when you turn off the engine.
