Should I get a different drop in filter?
Hey guys , it's that time to change out my air filter again and I was wondering what you guys thought about getting a more "performance" oriented air filter.
I currently use the OEM part and was just curious if switching to the f sport filter or something similar would bring about any benefit over stock. Since I can get an OEM or close to OEM replacement filter for a bit less than a k&n or f sport , should I even bother with a different drop in filter? I know there's no gains or whatever (or at least I doubt there is lol) but is there some benefit to dropping more cash on one of their filters vs. a stock OEM one? Oh and also I'm getting my Joe Z intake next week and plan on changing the filter at the same time of the intake install so just wanted to know what you guys thought was best... Thanks

If you're buying a Joe z, you might as well buy a performance filter. The only benefits are that a filter like the FSport is re-useable and provides better airflow. So in the long run, it pays for itself. The better airflow really is neglible. Other than that, you get the prestige of saying you've got an FSport item. :-p

I'd agree there isn't any performance gains yet using a reusable filter will save you money in the long run and prevent waste, OEM paper filters, from going to the landfill site.

Getting an injen intake will only lower your hp since the factory intake is as efficient as it gets. The only restrictive part to the factory intake is the Rubber hose which is what the Joe Z is designed to replace.

So since you guys are all saying that the intake filter basically provides Zero performance benefits I think I'll just stick to OEM or similar filters. I don't really mind buying a new air filter every once in a great while. Thanks guys

aem dryflow. I got about a 2 mpg boost. it has a better balance of flow and filtration than OEM. I saw this gain in my other car as well. It does not require oiling which is awesome. It will never need to be replaced, just cleaned every one and a while. Maybe every 30-60k miles.

factory intake is as good as it gets? haha
I have built some damn good intakes for some of my previous cars (function>form) and I can tell you there is usually plenty of room for improvement. biggest gain is ditching or modifying (heavily) the stock feed. best functioning intake doesn't matter so much about if you retain the standard airbox or fit an aftermarket filter, the main thing is keep it sealed up tight and fed from the front of the car. if you want actual gains you will notice then you need an unrestricted feed to the front. on one of my old card I actually was able to see the air/fuel ratio getting leaner in each gear as speed increased due to the extra air being crammed in.
I intend to do something similar to my 2IS but not sure if I will keep the airbox or build an intake from the turbo forward (european is220d). I know I can eek the most out of a full build but I haven't properly looked at what all needs to be plumbed in and what sections of silicone and hardpipe id need and in what sizes, where I will route feed piping, blah, blah.. I do have a nice 3 inch feed and a duct to suit the end of it, initial idea is brackets bolted to the undertray behind the bumper grill but we will see..
