Default Mystery passenger door rattle driving me nuts!

For about a year, on rare occasions, I get a metal on metal squeak from somewhere in the passenger side door panel. It used to happen once a month, but now it's usually every few days, in the morning, after the car has sat overnight and is starting to warm up. Another time it happened in the afternoon about 30 minutes into a freeway drive. Very random.
I've leaned over while driving, trying to press on all the different parts and surfaces, but nothing makes it shut up when it's happening. Then suddenly after about ten minutes of driving, it goes away.
When parked, I sat in the passenger's seat and banged on all surfaces, with only one time producing a somewhat similar sound. The one time I got it to do it, it was at the base of the armrest, or slightly beneath it.
Of course, everytime I've taken it to the dealer, they've never been able to produce it. Now that I'm out of warranty, I'm on my own. It's one of the louder squeaks I've ever had. Got to get to the bottom of it and find out where it's coming from.
Any ideas? Again, metal on metal, almost a knocking/banging sound when I hit bumps and ruts.

Thanks!

I had a similar rattle/squeak that was also coming from the passenger side door area. I was just about to give up hope until I found the source to be the shelf/tray-insert inside the glove box. For some reason it took 3 years to start making that noise, but when it decided to start- it was daily!

I removed that tray and my problem was solved.

Yes, I had problems from the glovebox tray too. In fact, just had the dealer insulate it before the warranty died. That helped a bit, it's quieter now. But this noise seems to be coming from the passenger door and not the glovebox area. Previously, I had a lighter vibration sound coming from the top plastic trim that meets the window. That too comes and goes with temp variances. But the newer noise is lower in the door and a loud metal squeak.
I feel like I'm falling behind with maintaining the goodness of my car with all these noises popping up. And being out of warranty I don't have confidence these are things I will be able to take apart and tighten myself. =(

Also check the seat belt - when retracted depending on where the seat is it can rattle against the pillar.

Great point about the seatbelt buckle. Had that years ago and had no idea it was until I looked over and untwisted it. This time however, it's not. Already checked. Great tip though!

I have the same issue on my 11. Too random to call it out to dealer with 3 years left on warranty. I will check the shelf in the glove box - but I have also had some luck when I put the window down a bit and back up ALSO I don't seem to have an issue when the window is down even a little bit. Perhaps wind noise blocks it - I don't know. Would love to know what it is..... maybe it is window related...

I hadn't thought about cracking or rolling down the window. Good idea! Tough though like you said to still hear the racket when the wind is buffetting in.
