Default Side Curtain Airbag

Does anyone know if your lexus gets T-Boned on the passengerside, will the side curtain airbag deploy????

Does there have to be someone sitting on the passenger seat????

Yes, it will. The passenger seat air bag is the only one that will not deploy if the passenger is seated improperly and the force of the air bag could hurt the occupant. This happens if the front seat passenger would fall asleep and position their head in the path of the air bag.

Bare in mind that the air bag would deploy if the SRS system detects a force that exceeds the programmed thershold. The side impact sensors and the main SRS ecu have sensors in them to detect the force.

If the vehicle would be involved in a wreck and the system has detected the crash being severe enough that it YOU need it, it WILL deploy.

Often I've had people stop by the shop with severe damage and questioning why the air bags didn't deploy. My response to them is, "If you were involved in a wreck so severe that you NEEDED the air bag to deploy and it didn't, would we be having this conversation?"

Yes, the vehicle seat occupancy detection sensor in the ISX50's does measure improper seating posture to regulate deployment. The passenger side airbag is a twin stage depowered squib that inflates roughly at 173mph as opposed to the 200 mph on the first airbag equipped models of the early 90's. Also, the curtain airbag can deploy in sever frontal impacts that activate the "Lateral G" sensor of the SRS Control Module. This typically happens if there is substantial A or B pillar damage.

I got T-boned on the passenger side with someone sitting there. The side airbags did deploy but the front ones did not, which I thought was pretty nice. Not sure if that is common with most side airbag cars. I just always assumed if one went off they all would.

Rarely will all airbags go off in cars... you would have to be in one hella accident for that to happen...
