IIRC, the visors are just made out of material which insulates/bounces back audible sounds. It's nothing fancy. While it works, it's more of a marketing gimmick.

You can also put foam in the dashboard and say that it decreases engine sound.

Or how about seat filling deadening the sound of ventilated seats.

Get the drift?

Looks like the open slot in the visor acts as a sound trap, maybe absorbing noise around the upper windshield area, just a guess.

I never noticed any sound reduction and I always have my visors down. As for the slot in the visor, I just stick business cards in there.

yeah I think this feature is the most ridiculous I've ever seen. First of all EVERY car's sunvisors are going to block at least sound. I mean it's simply mass between your ears and the noise. Ok so Lexus put some sound proofing in them, big whup. IMO this is the dumbest marketing ploy I've seen. They're really stretching it. Everywhere I read or see they're playing up this sunvisor. they're almost always in the up position anyway, which isn't going to do any good at all.

Can anyone seriously tell me they hear a difference in noise from when they're up or down? come on. The new IS has sooo many impressive features they could market. They should lay off the visors before people laugh and say "oh come on now..."

and I'll tell you what's even worse....if they honestly think this is a big deal, are we paying more for our cars for this useless feature?

From the video on the the Lexus website, it seems that they help with the sound of the air turbulence that occurs when the moonroof is open.
