1st timer bldg. 400whp daily driver is300 -- Krazy?
Hi all -- great site. first time poster (actually second)
been lurking.
glomming as much info as possible on choosing car candidates, have narrowed down to is300 or wrx sti.
This is a fairly long post, and if you are willing to read it, I would love any feedback that you may have.
some questions:
1) exactly how different is the 2jz-ge from the 2jz-gte in the supra? Ihave been looking, but haven't (yet) found definitive info regarding differences. Supra seems to be bullet=proof. Am scared of a swap for my first project..
2) is 400whp realistic or completely rediculous to shoot for as a daily driver? I have heard both answers. I can move towards this number in stages...these days, 300whp seems increasingly 'pedestrian' given the plethora of very fast stock cars available right from the dealership.
3) beyond cai, larg-ish turbo, intercooler, fuel pump upgrade, fuel injector upgrades, ecm or engine management system upgrade, downpipe, headers, (are these redundant?) hi-perf cat, cat back exhaust, will this type of hp target require additional strengthing of the head or the bottom of the engine, or can I reasonably expect reliability at 400whp (which I wont even come close to using 85% of the time) with otherwise stock internals.
4) am I missing some or many major/minor considerations here? Of course, I will be funning a manual tranny, which I will fortify should the need arise. I will also upgrade the suspension as well.
Thanks in advance for feedback.
Dave -- please feel free to point me to any websites that you have found helpful

I believe you can find some information from here!! Altough the engine is from Aristo( GS in U.S) in Japan, not from the Supa.

Lots of information out there to search and find. I'll point you in the right direction w/ 2 detailed posts about the differences between the GTE and the GE engine and it's internals icluding pics of rods, pistons and such.
PICS of ge pistons vs. gte pistons.

1) GTE rods and pistons are stronger, and the block has oil squirters.
2) 400 rwhp daily driven is very reasonable.
3) You can do it on the stock bottom end, but remember that the vvt-i rods are very weak compared to the GTE rods and earlier GE rods, they will be the weak link.
4) Sounds like you have a handle on what you need, will be good to see another boosted vvt-i in NY.

I'm pretty sure there aren't separate part numbers for a 98supra shortblock vs. a 97 shortblock.. Maybe you might know. i would guess that the only difference is the head, but not sure.

They changed the disign a tad. There's a thread on .net that has pics of an '01 rod and piston next to an '02 rod and piston.
