Default Keyless Remote Key Fob

Ok, so it is a random question but was wondering if the car could drive maybe 3 miles away from someone holding the key. I ask this question because my mother was dropping me off at work and I forgot to give her the keys to her vehicle, she has a 2011 BMW X3, yes I know, not a Lexus but I found that I still had her when I stuck my hand in my pocket that was maybe 5 minutes after she drove off. I immediately called her to let her know, to my amazement the car did not stop and she was about 2 miles away. Sorry but I find that amazing and wondered if the GS could accomplish the same thing. All answers are welcome.

I would guess the key is only a perimeter functioning part of the security system. It doesn't surprise me that once security/ID is obtained the rest of the electronics take over. If not, imagine if the battery in your FOB went bad on a long drive -- that could get ugly

Ok, always thought that beeping sound meant the imment death of the engine cutting off in the GS.

What everyone else said, however I learned they hard way. I was warming up my car in the garage and went inside to grab a bottle of water. The car started beeping as I walked away, and assuming the car was going to shut off I threw the keys on the sun roof. Proceeded to come back to my car, drove off and didn't realize my keys were on the roof until I heard them slide off as I accelerated onto the freeway. FML.
