Default URGENT Rust on Shifter Shaft

Took my car to dealer due to a leak of ATF and its the shifter shaft seal thats leaking. The advisor told me that replacing the seal will not completely fix the leak and leak may come back soon becuase the outside of thew shaft has rust on it. It was also missing the cover. He said the only way to correctly fix it rebuild the tranny.

anyone have input on the rust issue?

Do you have pics? Which area is it at? I live in Canada where they salt like mad and has not heard of this issue before. Our exhaust rusts through which is a more common problem.

Why is there a missing cover? Has anyone played with the transmission before? Also why do you need to do a rebuild if a gear selector shaft seal is bad?

Unsure why the cover is missing. Im guessing the time I took to lexus to do fluid change they mentioned the seal was leaking slightly and may have not put it back on. But the shaft itself has rust not the seal. I replaced the seal now. But the tech advised that due to the rust THE LEAK WILL come back (not even a it may come back IT WILL come back) to properly fix, the shaft has to be replaced which requires tranny rebuild. Is that correct?

Go back to the same Lexus dealer that you had replace the transmission fluid and tell them their tech for got to replace the cover. Covers rarely fly off on their own, you shouldnt be responsible for a careless tech. You paid the dealership top money to have to notch work, leaving covers loose or missing thats just sloppy work.

Did the shaft rust because of the missing cover?

Is the shaft you are referring to in the middle of the picture and to the right of the oil fill plug? Is yours the AWD version? The AWD doesn't come with certain tranny covers i.e. Transmission splash shield under the transmission pan.

Did yours also have rust on it? Was it similar to the amount you see on mine?

I went ahead and put a cover on it now and added white lithium grease to the shaft
