vent cowell

I had the same problem, and tried a few different things before discovering it was the vent cowl rubbing against the windshield (outside). I opened the hood, removed the vent cowl and glued a strip of felt all the way across, which fixed it completely. somebody posted photos and instructions, but it's pretty easy, once you find all the clips.

My gs460 is at 144k and it's been -10 here in Minnesota and I must say its so much quieter than any car I've owned, I almost didn't buy a 3GS due to this concern but when I looked at the service history the original owner brought it in three times for noises, apparently they did something to the dash, glovebox and door panels. It's very quiet.
