Buying a friend's 01 GS300 with some issues
Hi all,
My friend has a 2001 GS300. It has 180k on it. The car looks like a brand new car, minus some scratches here and there.
It runs rough and was pulling misfire codes. He can't figure it out and had something come up and wants to sell it.
THe VSC light is on, and the CEL codes for the misfires come and go. Sometimes the CEL light comes on, sometimes it goes away. Around town it runs decent, but it definitely misses while running.
I know this is a shot in the dark without really getting more info, but that's really all we know right now.
He really can't figure it out, but I'm considering purchasing the car to fix it up and give to my brother as a daily driver who is in need of a car to replace his aging car.
All advice is much appreciated.

Hi VJZ,
Start by going to any Auto Parts to get the cel code or codes and start from there. Auto zone is very good in that and moss of the guys there tell you what you need to do and what part need to buy. They can be a simple thing or like something more complicated. Give us an update later.

That's the thing. He never has cleared codes to ensure he can check them. They were misfire codes. I don't remember which ones specifically, but they were the P03XX codes. I know those are all related to misfire. I can't remember which ones.
I mean, I have read several threads about it being ten million things. Many times it's a coil pack, but I'd like to narrow it down to ensure it's good to go. Once it's running, we'll address other items it may need. Timing belt I think was done not long ago by a Toyota dealer.
I mean, the car, with a good buff job would look showroom new. It's SO clean.

Misfire can be to many thinks. ( MAF) Mass Air Flow, the air hose after the MAF and connect to the throttle body, one of the air hose on the intake manifold, spark plugs wires or coil pack. But the more common is the coil pack, spark plugs or spark plugs wires. Also, the plugs that given signal to the coil pack, that plug go bad for the heat on the engine and year of the car. That is what I said; They can be a simple thing or like something more complicated. Start

The plug on the left is cylinder one after about ten miles. Cylinder one is a sample of what the others look like. Its all cylinder five. The one on the right is cylinder five. No combustion at all going in that one.
Injectors click when power is applied.
Here is one thing my friend sent me this morning.
Update: ECU and harness looks good. Noid test is all good. All injectors getting constant on ignition and pulsing like they should be. Injector clicks and is in spec on ohm test, as are the rest. No visual flow test or compression test yet though.
I mentioned a similar issue on my old Jag XJ6. I went through hell trying to get it to turn over and run. Went through the fuel issues, ignition, etc. Wound up being a dropped valve. This is what I'm hoping is NOT the case with this GS3. It's too darn clean to have that happen. I mean, I know it's possible, but it SHOULDN'T happen with less than 200k on it. I mean, I have had two IS300s. One had closer to 300k on it before I sold it. (Thought I realize cars are always a case by case basis. But it's a 2JZ...they're bulletproof haha)
We're gonna throw in a set of injectors that are used, but known working off of an IS300 to see if there is a difference.
I do have one question. Since we have to give the injectors back to a friend, are there ANY Toyota or Lexus engines that have injectors that would be compatible with THIS car? I'm talking about some ones I can grab from a junk yard to use to get the car back to my place to finish this car off and get EVERYTHING in tip top mechanical shape.
As always, help is appreciated.

Please note, I have not been down to his house to run tests myself.
Anything I should do to see if we can get it running. I'm honestly not sure if he's cleaned out the OCV and screen yet.

the last thing you'd want to do is start throwing money at parts. Yes get the codes read. Having said that, I had a problem with rough running and VSC lights on/off. It is likely your VVT solenoid. it's about 150$ and takes about 3 minutes to install. If I had a buddy with another gs, I'd keep my old one and install it for a joke lol Anyway, I installed it and runs mint. if that's it, your gonna feel like you stole that car lol
