Default Cell phone interface?

So I noticed that my 2001 GS430 has cell phone buttons on the steering wheel, instead of radio control buttons. What kind of phone do I need to get, and how do I set that phone up to work with that interface?

Cell phone buttons on steering wheel? Hmmm, never seen or heard of that before. Any pics of it?

well, i think they are cell phone anyways, they don't do anything to the radio... basically, it has a VOL+ VOL- button, then another button that has a picture of a face with a phone next to it, and behind it has another button that I dont know what it is... None of these buttons do anything to control the radio or anything else for that matter, and the button with the phone makes me assume its a cell phone control.

I will try and see if I can take any pictures and post them tonight

You don't want the phone: it's ancient and analog; Verizon won't even give you a contract for it.

Car phones haven't made sense for years...

If you are talking about me, I had no success getting my steering wheel phone control to control my Nokia handset when it is in the cradle of the Nokia car kit. But it was relatively easy to hook up the kit up to mute the radio when a call is in progress and to use the built-in phone antenna in the rear window so I didn't have to mount an external phone antenna.

The problem with making the steering wheel controls work with a digital phone not meant for the Lexus phone system is that one would have to frabricate a complex electronic interface between the steering wheel control and the phone kit to produce the microvoltages needed to control the phone - the interface would likely be different for every phone manuafacturer and different for phones from the same manuafacturer. Doing this was far above my abilities.

Yes, your're the Lexus phone expert, my man. But sorry, I thought you had the steering wheel controls taken care of. Since your talking microvoltages, then I guess its not exactly a DYI job.
