I need a new windshield
A small rock today decided to hit the very edge of the windshield on the passenger side. The result? 10" crack running towards the centre of the glass and growing. I'm going to get a quote on this tomorrow, and also see how my insurance handles it. I know this has happened before with US members, but it will be interesting to see what the Canadian $$ cost is for the replacement.

Bummer.
You'd think with all the polymer technology available that someone would come out with a thin transparent film that would protect a windshield against, say, 90% of the stone strikes that cause just the kind of damage that you've experienced.

I'm sure my insurance will cover most of it. I was surprised to find that a Lexus ES350 windshield, replacement rubber and the new rain sensor 'part' comes to under $500CA in total. That's before tax and before installation. I thought the US members were paying way more than that, but I could be wrong.

In Florida, most (if not all) insurance companies cover windshield replacement 100%, no deductible. Probably from all those errant golf ***** flying around.
Side and back windows are not covered, even if hit by a golf ball.

sux, don't it?
For years now, I've been down on Toyota's winshield quality, even when their cars were quality... Look at just about any one with a few years on it closely and you'll see all kinds of microscopic chips, like sandblasting. I've since learned to just stay clear of "anybody" (not just semi trucks) in front of me and leave like a 3-5 second gap.
FWIW - if it makes you feel any better... I was driving down a two lane road in my Sequoia and a stone was kicked up by a car coming the opposite direction. By the time I got to work, the chip progressed into a crack top-to-bottom right in front of the driver's side... Well I had the windshield replaced and three days later a rock from "???" hit the passenger side and put a nice chip in the $450 replacement... 2 weeks later, another rock from "???" (nobody was in front of me for like a half mile) and hits the driver's side bottom of the windshield and created a nice bulls-eye!
Lived with it ever since.
Anyway... This was a hot topic over at Tundra Solutions back in 02-03 and someone pointed out that all Toyota windshields are prone to cracking/splitting because they're very thin around the edges, the 4-5 inches in from the body is the most vulnerable.
We have a POS company bought Ferd Freestar that's been used/abused and never taken care of (in fact need to get rid of it, it's become an eyesore) but the windshield doesn't have even a hint of a stone chip on it and the damn thing covers twice the area of any Toyota I've owned.
