Unhappy a/c compressor maybe going

I was told yesterday the rattling sound coming from the engine maybe my a/c compressor maybe going out, it's late April in Texas and this is the worst possible time. I have 89000 miles on my 08 ES 350. can someone give me a ballpark estimate (dealer/non-dealer) on this repair and possible alternatives.

Does the rattling noise stop or change when you declutch (turn the AC OFF) the compressor?

For starters you are talking about $500 just for the compressor. Should be about 4 hrs labor and you would need to replace the dryer.

the noise does stop when you turn it off, there also seems to be like a rubbing/hum/dragging feel and sound too, not much though

Pop out the cabin air filter and make sure there isn't a leaf or something stuck in the fan. Happens often being from Iowa
