Nope. You need the ML to play DVDs.

By default, you can only play the movie when your parking brakes are on, unless you mod it. And it plays probably 1 hour of the movie before the car turns itself off (to save battery). I noticed my DVD plays movies fine, but for some reason the audio skips when I put in homemade videos. Wierd.

thanks much, I thought DVD player is DVD player. It can display NAV system so it should be able to display images like movies or even pictures.
ML system is separate system(it combine audio, and movie) than NAV system.
If NAV system using DVD disk to display and store information then it should be able to play or display images. The question is how to input a player to do it.
so the NAV system is really just like a interactive DVD player.

I've watched a whole Harry Potter movie in the car. I opened windows, moonroof, and other things all throughout the movie so maybe the car "knew" I was there and didn't turn the battery off.
