Got new oem rotors and pads all around 02 ES300, big issue-Help?
Hey all
I know you have been seeing my name pop up a lot lately but this is the crunch time to get my ES in tip top shape so thanks for putting up with me.
Anyway,
four days ago I got new OEM rotors and pads all around on my 2002 es300.. ~500$
Now I notice my MPG has dropped 2-3 mpg and that when I get off from short trips that my rear brakes are very hot to the touch even if you just touch the rim of the wheel you can feel heat radiate. My front discs are literally cool to the touch. nothing. barely above ambient.
One side on the rear seems to be hotter than the other and is turning colors where the pad contacts the disc.... this is the rear Drivers side.... the Rear Passengers side is still hot...but not as hot and little discoloration..... the front discs are cool to the touch and have ZERO discolorations.
I don't brake heavy and I just got these a few days ago... and do not use the E brake or drag my foot on the brake... the stopping performance is good.
Here are some pictures...sorry if they aren't too clear.
what do you all think the issue could be? is this normal?
my Rear Driver disc.
My read passenger disc
My front discs both look like this condition

Michell tires plus. I don't particularly like them but they get the job done usually. I have a feeling they certainly messed this up as I fear the color change of the metal on that rear drivers side rotor is from extreme heat. I will bring it in to have it checked and fixed. I hope damage has not been done to the pad or rotor already...

It could either be a bad caliper, or frozen caliper pins.
The rear rotor has probably already warped (due to extreme heat), so they should replace it. The pads could also have become worn, if the caliper was bad.
Either way, take it back. You paid for the work to be done, it's their problem, not yours. Let them figure it out.

thank you all for the responses.
I will fight to get a new rotor put on that side.. I don't know about asking for one for the other side though. thoughts? Just new rear discs and pads? Is that fair to ask for in a screwup like this?
The other rear side gets way too hot as well and I sure as hell didn't pay $500 to have the life of a pad cut prematurely for the rears...
I will update you all come Monday when they fix the screwup.

^ I just had new brakes all around this past november, and changed my rear caliper since it was doing the same, tried re-lubricating it, but it turned out to be seized, and replaced it last week [exact same thing happening to you].
So, what i'm getting at, is be polite at first instead of a bat outta hell since it may just be your car.

^ No, they're fine. No point in trying to get something new, when its still new.
My caliper was slowly sticking for over a month [I assume] before it got bad... the pads are still like new.
The rear also, only has 20% or so of the total braking power, so its not a big deal. Just have them redo the slider pins, and monitor it for a few days after [touch rim/smell for 'burning' brake pad].
I'm hoping its not a seized caliper, that's what happened to me, after fixing it, it seized for good the next day when driving it.

Anyone else have an opinion ? I really just want a new pad after it has already discolored my rotor from the heat and dragging...

My experience is if pads get hot enough, at best the surface glazes badly and they won't bed down properly even with new rotors. You can file or sand them down to remove the layer of damage, but then you have less than a new pad. You should get what you paid for, new pads and new rotors.
