i use north when i dont have destination entered into nav, as it shows me the world as I understand it... on the other hand, when I have destination setup, then destination is set to be "up", not north. Makes sense to me at least.

North up. So I always know which way I'm heading.

There is no "deciphering" to turn left or right, it's intuitive.

I wonder if there is a science on this, whether it be left brain/right brain.

Direction of travel up - that way left turns are always to the left on the map. I've used both and find the "North Up" option useful on a large laptop screen with mapping software - mainly because you have so much real estate around you. On the tiny OEM and accessory nav screens, it's more helpful to have direction up because it requires only a glance to tell you where and how to turn - because you're don't need to see the "big picture" of your route.

My "navigator" working in the "chart room" (right seat) uses the North Up function to plot our course and make appropriate corrections to the pilot's nav system when she makes a change in route. I'm focused on a smaller scale, usually a mile or two (with appropriate arrow warnings of upcoming turns in the next few miles). Each has its uses, that become clear when you are using two separate systems.

80% direction, 20% North

I'll vary it with the zoom level of the map. Zoomed out will be North up for an overview of map.

Yep, I have both. Split screen, the one facing north having a larger scale and the one with direction pointing up on a smaller scale.

That is pretty much pseudoscience, but the Myers-Briggs type indicators are not.

S for rotaters and N for true north.

I hate when the little pac man thing chases my arrow and tries to gobble it up!

(apologies to Clark Griswold)
