What is the most someone has paid for or heard or paying for car insurance
Last night at a bar I bumped into an old friend from school when I was a kid.
He told that less than a year ago, he was involved in a roll over crashed in Hondra Prelude going 190km/hr. He also did not have car insurance (his third offence) and was very lucky to be alive. He broke something in his back and had a concussion.
He lost his licence and the police wanted him in jail for 6 months. He got off the no insurance charges and jail but the dangerous driving stood and his licence was suspended for one year.
He now is quoted for a new car at $13,700 (can) for the basic insurance.
Anyone with similar stories?

Anyhow, back in 1992 I had 3 speeding tickets within 9 months, and was dumped by my insurance company. I ended up with Allstate, paying $206/month for a 91 Civic Dx. That was pretty brutal at the time.
It's funny to think back on it now, as all 3 tickets were pretty minor, each time about 10-15 MPH over the limit on the freeway. These days, everybody's doing that...even the cops.

I know a Suzuki Hayabusa is not a car, but when a brand new one 2 years ago, I was quoted 10,000-12,000 for full coverage per year! That's more than the bike itself. It was a fun bike, but riding around with just liability insurance was not a good idea so I had to sell it.

When I bought my CL, I went with Progressive because they seemed cheap ($250/month). I got in an accident with the car maybe 3 mos. after I started with Progressive and knew my rates would go way up. I called my local State Farm who I had insurance with before and they wanted $450/month. Granted....I was 24 and had A TON of tickets.
I actually got a new policy last week from Progressive for my SL and it's only $190/month (I am 26 now). I'm giddy. I haven't paid that little in a LONG time.

An interesting question, but it may be a tough one to answer. Insurance regulations and allowable rates are usually set by State Insurance Commissions, but it's possible that if the commission does not allow a high enough rate for a company to insure and make a profit on, say, an exotic car, the company just won't sell premiums in that state or for that car.
As to who, among private individuals, actually PAYS the most insurance out of their own pocket for their auto collection, my guess is probably either Jay Leno or the Sultan of Brunei...they have the world's two best-known private collections of exotic cars.
