so are radar detectors illegal or are they frowned upon. like do i have to hide it when i get pulled over?
Laser jammers are illegal in many states including California. Radar detectors are legal, but as I said earlier many agencies have or are going to LIDAR, and the radar detector will not help you if you get targeted by laser if your speeding.

Conventional radar detectors are illegal in D.C. and VA. In VA, police can legally impound them if you are caught with one, but rarely do. If out-of state drivers passing through simply disconnect them and not use them while in the state, usually the cops won't bother them. State Troopers in VA, though, often know when you are using one.....they have "detector detectors.
Since you're in CA, you probably won't be driving in this area much if ever, anyway.
Jammers, which don't just detect, but actually interfere with police radar, are, as far as I know, illegal everywhere. Get caught with a jammer and you could be in big trouble.
I have 8500 and I will replace it with another when it craps out. I feel lucky that AZ allows them. I still use mine in CA but keep it low or just put it in the cup holder ( it still works like that believe it or not)

No need to feel lucky, a vast majority of states allow their use in personal vehicles. Keep in mind that effectiveness increases with proper mounting location.

Radar detectors also have vg-2 which detect those police detectors that are detecting the radars lol......
Most jammers are concealed in bumper and not visible and there are also light absorbing sprays that throw off those instant-on lasers and gives driver a little time to slow down . Detector plus spray is a good option or drivers could just slow down but that won't happen.
In similar fashion, there are literally enthusiast forums for radar detectors. I know this one guy has gone out and tested many brands (escort, beltronics, valnetine one, and more) with videos and everything.
He'll go out looking for police and will provide video evidence of which brands go off first, which brands give false alarms, etc.
Here is the person who does all the tests, his screen name is "veilguy" and here is his blog -
