Default Rude Drivers Reduce Traffic Jams

"Traffic jams are minimized if a significant fraction of drivers break the rules by doing things like passing on the wrong side or changing lanes too close to an intersection. The insight comes from a cellular automata study published this month in the journal Physical Review E. In effect, people who disregard the rules help to break up the groups that form as rule-followers clump together. The risk of jamming is lower if all people obey the rules than if they all disobey them, according to the analysis, but jamming risk is lowest when about 40 percent of people drive like jerks."

It doesn't help when the one rude driver causes all other drivers to stop in fear for their safety, or have utter bewilderment, or experience pure anger and frustration.

Therefore, rude drivers are the cause of traffic...

^^^^ Yes and no. If the driver is driving erratically, that scares and can cause traffic. On the flip side someone passing people and speeding will help traffic. The reason for this is quite simple. In most cities the highways are used past their capacity and on top of that The speed is set at usually 55mph. So when one speeds they spend less time in a given area.

I'm with Philip here. Traffic jams, especially the miles-long ones we regularly get here on the notorious D.C. Beltway, are often caused by accidents. And what often causes accidents?

You got it.....rude and impaitient drivers breaking rules.

there are 2 main types of people that break rules though

1. people that dont know the danger of doing so and what possibly could happen when they take that action (ie. right turning car may take a turn and hit u from the right side of intersection if u changed lane to the right too close to intersection)

2. people that have thought through and saw a high/er margin of safety by breaking the rule by going and pass by drivers that follow the rules but cause traffic jams

also people who break rules better have the right car and right skills to do it
you cant expect to pass an 18 wheeler safely with a POS Kia Rio by going on the opposing side of the road
here is something to think about

if you try to pass all of the slow and unsafe drivers and become the lead car in a pack of cars, you will less likely be involved in an accident because there wont be any cars around you to hit you
at least only the 1~3 sides to worry about instead of 4 sides

nah. most of the time, traffic isn't caused by rubberneckers.

it's caused by poorly designed bottleneck exits and freeway junctions.

if some people broke the rules and took the shoulder lane, it would just speed things up a tiny bit.
