Trunk lid does not stay open !
it actually tries to cut my head off. Stupid design no shocks but tension rods. any way to make them a little better - I know they will never be good but a little more tension would be awesome... its a shame that Lexus tried to penny save by not installing a smart hinge and a shock. The hinges rub againts the cargo and take way useful space and the whole thing just wants to cut your head off...
any idea ? besides a stick in a trunk ?

I think I found it. there are 3 slots deep inside
on the side's for each rod. Mine was in the upper, I moved them all the way down. Did make a slight difference, still very primitive and 70's technology so not perfect but better then before.
I hope they redesigned this on the 3rd gen GS. not that I will ever buy an another lexus...

i believe it was supposed to be an improvement from the previous version of the GS i have both a 1GS and 2GS and my first gens trunk shocks are completely out and the trunk is quite heavy, and i not only have almost got my head cut off.... it feels like its gonna crack your skull so i much rather the primitive 70's technology tension rods as they are adjustable... on the 1GS shocks are just a part i never get around to....

I don't like the design of the trunk as well... The first day i got my car, i was taking my lic plate off and place my keys in the trunk (i know not the best place to put it) and turned back because i was in an alley way and car came close to me, and the trunk slammed shut when i took my hand off it, and I didn't have a spare and the trunk release was locked, so I was SOL... So I had to rip the whole back seat to get into the trunk to get my keys...

My trunk doesn't open by itself because I have the OEM spoiler. My brother took his off his GS and his trunk flies open when he hits the release. Would I be able to adjust it so mine could open like that?
I remember a thread on an IS300 forum about replacing their trunk struts with some stronger Camry hood struts and they would be able to use the trunk as a catapult. I wish we could do that.

It is a case of ... hard to please every one ...
The right adjustment is close to perfect balance. As you swing the trunk up the cg moves and tesnion bars keep the trunk up.
Some wish that once you release the trunk, it opens fully .... making it easy to place stuff in the trunk.
For folks who add a spoiler afterwards, the tension seems less than desired.
