Would You Rent Out Your Lexus When It’s Not in Use?
Being on the cutting edge of technology has greatly benefited Lexus in the past, so while this latest car-sharing idea may seem a bit far-fetched, it may also just be the future.
That’s what Toyota is banking on with their latest partnership with Getaround, a car-sharing platform that allows vehicle leasers and owners to rent out their cars when not in use.
Toyota isn’t just partnering with the startup either. According to Forbes, they’ve also made “a strategic investment of an undisclosed amount.”
And you can already see the first flowerings of the new partnership in San Francisco, where Toyota and Lexus leasers and owners have already been invited to use Getaround to “rent, locate, unlock, and drive the vehicles without needing a physical car key.”
Then they can apply the money earned from that rental towards the vehicle’s monthly lease payment, to offset the cost of ownership. Not for nothing, but this is also akin to the future that Elon Musk has envisioned for Tesla. And he seems pretty forward thinking.
Well, it looks like the future is now for Toyota and Getaround, at least in San Francisco. And by January 2017, the service will be available to all new Toyota Financial services customers.
Will you be renting your Lexus out to strangers?
