Leading in Matters Safety

Toyota and Lexus have for a long time led in building basic safety systems for their vehicles. Years ago, Toyota was the first automaker to introduce forward collision warning.  And Lexus made a big announcement recently that will bring some peace of mind to its buyers.

Lexus Safety System Plus

Lexus said that the Lexus Safety System Plus, a package that houses numerous safety features, will be available as standard on all of its future cars. The first units to feature the system will be rolled out in 2020. Lexus claims that the technology is built to protect pedestrians, passengers, and drivers by preventing crashes.

A World Without Crashes

The general manager and group vice president of Lexus, David Christ, said that the brand is working to deliver a world with no crashes. According to data obtained from NHTSA, there were 6.5 million crashes in 2017, most of which could have been avoided.

Front Crash Prevention

The Front Crash Prevention will be the first safety feature. It's built to detect pedestrians and vehicles that are in front of the car. If the system anticipates a collision, it gives the driver visual and audible signals. Under conditions where the brake isn't engaged in time, the system does it for the driver. This automatically slows the car down or brings it to a complete stop.

Lane Departure Warning

Lane Departure Alert keeps track of the position of your car as you drive in your lane. High-resolution cameras aid in sending visual and audio alerts when you drift out of your lane at speeds of more than 32 mph. Adding to the visual and audio warnings is steering-wheel vibration that keeps you focused and alert on the road.

Automatic High Beams

The new High Beam intelligent technology enables drivers to see better at night and prevents the car from blinding other drivers. The system automatically changes to low beams when a car approaches and shifts back to high beams when the road is clear. This also happens when the system detects oncoming lights.

Adaptive Cruise Control

The Adaptive Cruise Control system works like conventional cruise-control. It allows you to match the speed of the vehicle ahead by setting speed and following distance. Once you reach the following distance, the car automatically slows down to reduce the risk of a collision.

Total Human Model Software

Most of Lexus' safety features are a product of the THuMS software, also known as the Total Human Model for Safety. It's a virtual crash dummy system that represents actual humans and provides millions of data points. Virtual human beings with muscles, tendons, bones, and internal organs are used to detect even the slightest bruise or scrape in case of a collision. The system helps to determine the impact and solutions to unprecedented collisions. It has been widely used and shared by other automakers across the world.

Advanced Driving Simulator

The Lexus driving simulator is one of the world's most advanced safety systems. It's built to understand the behavior of drivers. Reactions are analyzed at speeds of up to 186 mph. The simulator is also able to cover six different directions and bend by 30 degrees all at once. Ordinary drivers are studied under extreme conditions without the risk of real-world outcomes.

Features Appearing in 2020

Two more safety features that we should expect to see in Lexus vehicles are Automatic Park and Automatic Engine Shut-Off. The former will be fitted in vehicles that feature electronic shifters and brakes. These will be engaged automatically to park the vehicle if the driver exits without doing so. This is expected to minimize the number of rollaway incidents.
