2022 Lexus GX to Soldier on Ahead of Rumored Redesign

Keeping It Fresh

The current-gen Lexus GX has been around since the 2010 model year, receiving two facelifts along the way that have kept it fresh in terms of appearance. However, it's long overdue for a redo, and that's precisely what Lexus has planned for the near future. However, it won't be in 2022, though the automaker reportedly plans on giving the SUV a complete overhaul very, very soon.

Minor Changes

A totally new GX is rumored to be on the way for the 2023 model year, but in the meantime, the 2022 model will continue to be offered in three trim levels - Base, Premium, and Luxury. New color options will be on the docket, while pricing should remain unchanged with a starting MSRP of $53,450.

V8 Power

The good news for fans of Lexus' naturally-aspirated V8 is that it will continue to be offered in the GX for at least one more year. The 4.6-liter V8 produces 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque, which flows through a six-speed manual. It's a no-frills powerplant and one that won't thrill given the SUV's hefty curb weight, but it's smooth and reliable nonetheless.

Old Tech

Lexus has done a good job of keeping the GX's spacious interior fresh over the last decade-plus, though the third-row is a bit tight for anyone adult-sized. Unfortunately, the technology, at this point, is rather dated and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility are still likely not in the cards here, despite the fact that they're offered on almost every other vehicle on the planet these days.

Styling

On the outside, the GX will continue to forge ahead with the same styling that was updated for the 2020 model year, which means the same large spindle grille and aggressive lines. That will also go down as the last refresh for the GX before it receives a complete overhaul in 2023, too.

Safety Features

The good news is, as is always the case with Lexus, the GX is packed with safety features and technology including the Lexus Safety System+, trailer sway control, 10 airbags, and a slew of other goodies that give you a little extra confidence when out on the road.

Looking Ahead

Though many rumors have surfaced suggesting the GX will get a total redesign for the 2023 model year, little has leaked in regards to what that might consist of. At the very least, we'd expect the GX to ride on a new platform, with new powertrains (likely not a V8, but there will be more electrified options) and a completely new interior and exterior design. So for now, we'll continue to keep our ears to the ground.
