Lexus: Why is my Interior Rattling?

Rattling interior trim can drive a sane person crazy. Stop the maddening noise with these tips for securing the Lexus's interior.

This article applies to the Lexus IS, ES, RX, GS (2005-2013).

The interior pieces of a Lexus don't necessarily require maintenance, but they might squeak for attention as the mileage piles on. Interior trim tends to be one of those areas that wear out. Over time, weather can cause seals and lining to dry out, which causes excessive vibration. That vibration can often produce annoying creaking and tapping noises.

Materials Needed

  • Flat head screw driver or non-marring pry tool
  • Razor blade or box cutter
  • Felt liner or foam tube
  • Lithium grease

Step 1 - Visit the dealer

Often, the main cause of rattles are manufacturing errors. A clip might be broken or a screw might've come loose. It is worth having the dealer take a look to pinpoint the cause, and even perform the necessary repair to replace or fix the problem.

Step 2 - Remove the squeaky trim panel

It may be obvious that the rattling is coming from a specific trim or panel. If that's the case, follow these steps.

  • Use a flat head screw driver or non-marring pry tool to lift up on the edges of the panel and remove.
  • Fit felt liner into the edges of the panel. Cut the pieces to fit.
  • Place the adhesive side of the felt sticker or liner into the metal portion of the crevice that makes contact with the panel.
  • Replace panel and press down to snap into place.
  • Spray lithium grease on the under side of the panel you removed.

Step 3 - Inspect door stoppers and seals

By design, the door stoppers of most car models are made of rubber that can be prone to cracking and drying. The constant impact between the stopper and the door frame can cause this component to wear over time. A worn-out rubber door stopper will allow wind to pass through, causing vibration and noise.

Warning!

The Lexus ES 330 and 300 models have a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) that covers bad seals used in the rear door trim. Dealers can perform maintenance on rattling door trims for free. For other rattles, however, owners may need to get creative.
