Default tire size/performance

Got my new GS300 MSRP 50,409 fully loaded for 46,000 on the dot. Mercury metallic with black interior. The lowest price I've seen so far so I jumped on it 7/8/05. Stock tires are dunlop 225/50/17's My question is for all of the tire experts out there...Which tire is most compatible for a replacement 225/40/18's or 225/45/18's to ensure optimal fit and performance?
Thanks for all your help

245/40 would be optimal for 18s but if given only the two choices, I'd go with the 225/45 too.
