the front is just like my 8.5 +32, and it's very very aggressive. 19 and fat setup and you will rub a bit when you hit something deep (refer to my post above).

the rear 10 +38 would be very aggressive too, you will rub BAD unless you trim quite a bit of the fender tab. read, it will RUB for sure

that's weird coz' i have 20x10 +43, that's equal to 9.5 +37, and i never rub in the back even before i trim the fender tab. must be close i guess. and no i don't have any finger gap in the back at all
rominl,

I just checked the plastic tab in the rear fender of my car, and only the very edge of it appears to be hitting the tire. The ideal offset for the fat setup must be pretty close; for some reason, it only rubs on the right side of my car .

As far as your 20's not rubbing, perhaps the reason is because you are running a 275 instead of a 285 on your rear wheels. Just that little bit of extra room afforded by the tire going inwards must be the difference.

Also, how much did you trim your fender?

oh you have 285 in the back? if so that's exactly why it rubs

i trim about 5mm i think, right to the point where the screws still holds. when you look at the tab you will notice that if you trim past a certain point, the screws will have to go. i stop right there

and the rubbing, same here. for some reason my pessenger front rubs more than driver front, no idea

Let me rephrase: My rear 275 is on a 9.5" rim, while your rear 275 is on a 10" rim. Though it may work out to be essentially the same offset, your tire is stretched a little bit and hence is not quite as square in profile. That little extra curvature of the tire may help to keep your rear tires from rubbing, since we're talking about a few millimeters difference between rubbing and not rubbing.

And thanks for the tip on shaving the fender - I'll consider doing it.

A "FAT" 19 setup should be looked at as a standard 20" setup in terms of offset.

PVMike is correct about the angle of a stretched wheel. From my calculations, you loose about 1.2mm worth of offset. Now a good setup for 20" wheels is +41 front and +37 rear. +38 front will also work but +41 give less rubbing in some situations (such as having your wheel turned and going up a steep driveway).

Now because the overall diameter of the FAT 19 or standard 20" setup is almost 1" taller than the factory setup, you might get some INSIDE fender rubbing if you lower the car a lot.

As for rubbing on one side...well there are a couple of factors that can cause this...for one thing, your wheels might not have the exact same offset. Even if it's labeled....unless you have an offset measure tool, it's hard to tell...you could take your wheels off and put a firm straight edge that sits ONLY on your rim and then use a ruler to measure to the backpad and check to see that both sides are even...it's not the way to get the offset but at least you can measure the difference (if any). The other likely thing it could be is that your rotor's mounting pad is not the same thickness on both rotors. Yes, this happens....when you're pushing the very edge of offsets, such things will make a difference.

I have personally changed my offset to be a bit more conservative just to absorb some of these variations (true tire width, pad thickness, etc., etc...) Going "agressive" has some disadvantages with little benefits....the only time I would go agressive is if you need to clear big brakes.

Manaray,

I'm glad to see you around here again. I thought maybe you had gone German.

Do you still drive your GS around? It's still my favorite non-sponsored GS (Junction is very nice too man). I don't think I'd trade your car for any newer 4 door sedan out there right now.

And btw, I do recall that we were supposed to meet up for some food awhile back... Let me know what you're up to.

Mike

can anyone with 245/40/19+275/35/19 and has ~1.5" drop in the front advice if "rubbing" is an issue?
I have 19x8.5 +38 front and 19x10 +42 rear. I have the fat tire setup (245/40, 275/35).

My car is now pretty low with Tein Flex - about 1 finger in front and basically no finger in the back.

I don't experience any rubbing in normal driving. I do experience a 'quick' rub in front if I hit a sudden transition up or down at some speed and if the damper is set fairly soft with EDFC. It's no biggie. I can also experience an occasional slight rub in the front if I'm in REVERSE and hard crank the steering one way or the other. Again, not a biggie.

Henry, when you talk about trimming the fenders are you talking about sanding down the black plastic edge pieces or the metal edge ? If you sand down the metal edge, did you seal and repaint it somehow to stop it rusting!? I don't think I need to do this anyway since my occasional rub is up top I think, but I was just wondering.

paul, yes, i sand down the black plastic (it's actually metal inside) and also the real metal fender tab. after that i just use touchup paint and seal the wwhole thing. it's actually safer than rolling, coz' that will chip the paint easy
