Default Android Auto in 2026: Gemini added, does it work?

For anyone here using Android Auto? I just got Gemini enabled, and the first time I tried to make a call, it told me it does not have access to my contacts. Gemini as the assistant in Auto is slowly rolling out. I do have a Google Workspace account, so my experience may not be typical of a normal user that just has a gmail account. I am also the administrator of that Workspace so I have given myself all the permissions (some are off by default).

What is your experience?

I haven't tried it yet but I intend to. Something has changed I do see. I now have a male voice in lieu of a female voice before. Also the rext message reading is different.

I always have the female voice on everything. My wife has trained me to listen better to a female voice My AA seems to have calmed down and works as it should now.

I have the TX 500h F Sport Performance. Syncing Android Auto with my Samsung ZFlip6 was a breeze. Everything works well except .... the voice commands. Ughh! I need to have my phone open and unlocked for it to work. I have adjusted all settings to allow 'Hey Google' with the phone locked and it works just fine outside of the car. Once inside and Android Auto functioning, it will not allow voice commands without unlocking the phone. Very disappointed but I really don't know if its a limitation on the car , the phone or Android Auto.

That sounds more like a phone thing. I have a Pixel 10 Pro XL, all of that works. Gemini is getting better, but not great yet as an assistant.

One small thing I've noticed, it could just be me, and I am by no means an audiophile, or sound engineer, but there is a noticeable sound quality difference between using Spotify through Android auto as opposed to using Spotify without Android auto. I prefer playing music without Android auto, music sounds a lot more rich and full, I don't have to turn it up past 25 volume to enjoy music and on the rare occasion I am in the vehicle alone, and I really want to rip it, I turn it up in between 37-40, top-notch listening experience during drives!
