Question Novice question on brake pads / rotors

My Lexus dealer told me that I need to replace brake pads, replace front rotor and resurface rear rotor. Guy quoted me $1,200. Doing some basic web searches, this sounds like way too much.

Any thoughts on what I need to figure out to get a fair/better deal here? I don't know jack about car maintenance and want to become a little more educated here. I've got a 2006 Lexus IS350 with 41k miles.

Thanks.

you should find one of the forum sponsors (tire rack, perfect brakes, or one of the online lexus parts dealers) and purchase the parts from them, then just make sure you can find an independent shop to do the work... brakes are quite easy...

If you have some mechanic ability you can do it all yourself. I suggest buying the dealer pads at least. But the rear rotors you can buy from an auto parts store. And any machince shop or auto shop can machine the front rotors( oncce you have them off the car) for you for a small fee. All you need is jack stands a jack, 14mm wrench, a 17mm wrench, and a c clamp.
