Default Are brake sensors really needed?

98 LS400
A little background on whats been going on.....My "brake wear" light has been coming on and i read that this usually happens when there is 1/8"-1/4" left on the brake pads. So i took it in to my shop (2nd opinion) and they said my rear brakes are at about 30%. Therefore, figured i got a little bit of time before i get my brake job done. Which brings me to my question, do i really need brake wear sensors? its seems its a convenience to have but repairing (if you know how to) or replacing (minimum $50 for 1) everytime a brake job is needed would suck. If you regularly are checking brake pads, lets say everytime you rotate tires would that be enough? does the brake wear sensor serve another purpose other than the convenience of saying "time for a brake job."

That's its only purpose, to warn you prior to wearing out pads...
