Hey guys,

I jsut put some 18s on my car that I bought from a friend right after i boguht my car. I am not sure if this problem was before the rims, but i do not think so.

heres the scoop
When i go over bumps i hear a noise come from the back driverside tire that sounds like a scrape or a rub. I cannot figure out what it is. It sounds like its alomost coming from the trunk, so it must be up in the wheel well. Also, when it happens a few tims the plasitic lining part of the wheel comes out a bit and i have to push it up to clip it back in.

Anyone have any ideas.

The only thing that could be a prob, but prob isnt is that I have 3 pirelli tires and 1 toyo and the one making the problem is the toyo. Please help.

As long as tires are of the same size it should have no.. noticeable effects (aside from different levels of grip.)

What you could do is put your stock wheels back on and see if you experience any problems. And pay particular attention to how the car drives. Make notes if you feel a bouncy ride especially on the back? Does the car feel unbalanced and unpredictable during turns or weight transitions, rather then linear? Does one side sway more then the other when you turn left /right?

Also push down on back problem area of the car and compare to the other side. Do you hear any clunking when you push on the problem area? Does it bounce excessively If you answer yes to any of these you could be looking at a blown strut? WHen you have a blown strut it should be pretty obvious to detect especially compared to a healthy strut.

How much is a new strut if thats what it is?

I dont think you need a new strut then id check and see if the wheels clear with enough space to clear the stock suspension travel.

I found that when there is weight in the back or trunk the car makes noise alot more on the driverside rear. I still cannot figure out what it is. please help me out.

What are the width and offset for the rear wheels?

8 inches and 40 mm offset. only 1 side makes noise

What is the tire size? 18x8 +40 on an ES might be too much. Tire size is important. In this case, tire design also comes into play since you are only noticing the rub with the Toyos.

Many ES owners seem to go for 18x7.5 with offsets in the low 40s.

Do you have pics?

You will probably have to trim (or at least roll) your fender. Either this or get a new tire if it is the culprit. You can try swapping the rear wheels to see if it will rub on the other side.

Note: Since I do not have an ES, I am only going by info I've read on CL.

how does one roll or trim the fender? and is it harmful to the car?

Probably the tires rubbing on your fender.

Put some masking tape on the fender and around the edge to the inside and drive around. Come back and check it out and you'll see exactly where it is hitting (if that is what the problem is).

That would probably be ok with a 225/40 but I can hazard a guess and figure you probably have some 235/40's on there.

Either way, 40mm with an 8 is a good looking fitment, but could have slight problems. Especially so with the tire you mentioned, it's probably slightly larger (different brands can have drastically different physical sizes, even with the same spec'd size).

Your rubbing sounds pretty minor though nonetheless, so it shouldn't be a big deal to fix it.

i think that the tire is rubbing because it is slightly larger (about 1/3 inch)

I plan on moving the tire to the front left and moving the other one back to see if that works
