Default Coilover experience on the 4GS

What is the experience with the coilovers on the 4GS? I am torn between the J5 and RSR coilovers.

At this moment I have RSR (Downsus) lowering springs on my GS450h f-sport, however the springs in combination with the Vossen wheels are not such a good match and are rubbing badly. Also one of the stock shocks has started leaking near the AVS switch on top.

J5 has a big advantage over RSR that they do support AVS. I am hoping there are some of you here with experience on any of these. Maybe you can tell me about the ride quality and smoothness.

Thanks!

I had both, RS-R coilovers and now I switched over to J5 with AVS. I prefer the ride quality of J5's. My J5's got the same spring rates as RS-R, but for whatever reason, they ride better. I do miss the 36 way dampening adjustment on RS-R, with J5's you don't have such flexibility. However, you do get to keep your Sport+ mode which makes the ride stiffer when needed, compared to riding stiff 24/7. J5's are also super light in comparison with an OEM or RS-R shocks.

Wow excellent, you have experience with them both! How is it comfort wise? When just cruising with passengers?

J5 will have to adjust the coilovers for the 450h. RSR gives me a discount because of the spring issue. However both are still expensive and I rather pay a few hundred more to get the best of the two, than go for the cheapest and regret that later. And J5 makes a very strong case with the AVS support. That together with your findings makes me lean towards the J5's.

Thank you for the info!

The comfort will depend on the height, the lower you go the worst it gets. If you are going with a conservative drop then it would feel like you are in Sport plus mode. You can adjust the dampening and make it softer or stiffer. I put mine in the softest, and even with the 20 inch wheels it rides great.

I've only driven with 2 people in the car, with no issues. The ride was pretty good.

It will be a little higher than it is now. probably about a finger to two fingers space between tire and wheelarc. So I should win on comfort, I hope, compared to the situaion now.

Again thanks a lot for the info, you've helped me a lot!

Good info! I was wondering the exact same thing.

Are there any other companies, however, planning on running an AVS compatible coilover?

Just ordered the J5s with AVS. Can't wait to get them.

Only J5 as far as I know. Haven't heard of any other AVS compatible coilover for the GS4.

I second what SNiiP3R said I love my J5 coilovers and I have had no issue's. I feel the ride is way smoother than lowering springs and the avs works perfectly. I would say go with the J5 coil-overs over any other because you don't lose the AVS functionality.

Is this still the case? even if the J5 may have a part that goes bad and you have to wait 3-4 months on a spare part?

Has anyone taken this on the track?

If you want avs compat, u only have one choice.

Also, J5 replacements are expensive.
