GS400 front end rattle
I finally found the cause of the intermittent front end rattle in my 2000 GS400. This only showed up over bumps on cold mornings , and would never perform when I took the car for a test drive with a mechanic.
Last week, I drove over a bad speed bump too fast, and the noise became much louder and more persistent. For the first time, I was able to hear it when I bounced the front suspension on the passenger side. Of course, this was 800 miles after the warranty expired.
There were a number of helpful posts on this web site that suggested possible causes. So, I purchased a set of Ultra Ramps with extensions, and crawled underneath with a flashlight. The cover under the engine was easily removed, and I found that the sway bar bracket on the passenger side was loose. The four bolts holding it on were not even finger tight. I tightened them and the problem is completely gone.
The good news is that it was easily fixed in less time than it takes to drive to the nearest Lexus dealer.
