Default caliper failure

How long should the rear brake calipers last? I have a 07 IS 350 w/93,000 miles. I do have the 100k extended warranty and shouldn't they be under warranty? Dealership is quoting $1300 repair bill. Dealership is stating that the inside rear calipers on both sides have pushed the piston beyond their seating and have seized. Causing inside brake pads to wear to 1mm of thickness. As soon as I heard the rear brakes start to squeal, I went to the dealeship for sevice.

The calipers are not a regular maintenance item, so if there's a problem (unless it was caused by lack of brake maintenance), then it's likely some kind of irregular mechanical failure that should be covered by warranty. That seems to be the case here given what I can tell from your description.

There is a known problem with seized rear caliper pins, but what you're describing sounds more serious and expensive. Again, I think they should cover this under warranty.

... Maybe our resident tech guru, Kurtz, can chime in.

Thank you.... RocketGuy3!!!

I do believe that the advisor had mention pins... My Lexus has been well maintained and garage kept. This kinda failure really confused me. Ive never had calipers go bad on a vehicle.
I just wanted to ask the community if they had anything similar or knew of any similar failures known to this generation. I actually broke down over the valve spring recall, also had the cam bearings and water pump done on warranty.

Ok, here's the deal with the faulty rear 2IS calipers. I know all of this firsthand, as within the last 4 months I had mine replaced (out of pocket) with new OEM calipers and new Axxis Ultimate pads. There is a TSIB for a faulty rubber seal (bad design, allows for moisture to enter the sliding pin area) on these rear calipers. What a seized caliper will do is not allow proper pad clamping force and even clamping force, allowing one pad to wear faster than the other. After the caliper is seized, you can have it repaired...but it will probably end up being cheaper to just get new calipers instead. If you have replaced brake pads on any car before, this shouldn't be above your abilities.

Here are some good options :

Ah, I guess I've been misunderstanding the that rear caliper issue then. I was thinking it was just that the pin holding the brake pads in place was rusted/sealed into place.

Alright, time for a second opinion, in my opinion...

If you are repeating what they said properly, the calipers should be fine. I highly doubt the pistons are seized, and there is no way they are overextended with brake pad still remaining... The only time I've seen pistons extended so far they seized, there was no brake pad remaining only backing plate, and even then, it had worn the rotor to half its regular thickness...

Even if it does need rear calipers, an independent shop will probably have a price half of what Lexus was quoting you...

Update!!! I got my car back from the Dealership. It was under warranty. The rear inner pad was worn to 1mm and outter was at 4mm. I caught it earlier enough that the rotor was able to be turned and used again.

Thank all of you that gave contructive advice.... It really helped!!! I didnt know about this problem, but I'm glad the Club Lexus community did. I only paid for pads and shim kit as opposed to over $1200.

Once again, Thanks!!!
