I am looking to get my lower control arms swapped out (going to order supra arms from Carson Toyota)
I've been quoted 3.1 hours per side at 85$ an hour from a local shop here in Memphis TN, this shop is not a Lexus/Toyota specialty shop. It may be a long shot but does anyone know of a good mechanic/shop that specializes in Lexus in the Memphis area that specializes in Lexus cars?
that price sounds good to me... and also, this isnt a lexus specific type of job... it super easy to do, u just need the right tools and preferably a lift so its easier. other then htat i would probably trust a trained monkey to do it. just sit and watch, make sure they use legitament tools and torq using correct specs. other then that ur golden.
also, to finish it off correctly, dont forget to get an alignment. some ppl will tell u that u dont need it. do it anyway!
how can you NOT need an alignment afterwords? even marking the cam bolts, you'll still be off slightly...
anyway, unless I did it wrong, it took me about three hours to remove and install both lower arms (ignoring time to swap bushings).
It took me about 30-45 mins per side the 1st time I did them so 3 hours per side is insane even by shop rate standards.
I agree.... I rather do it my self.... I even pulled out my motor my self... I can only pay to get the aligment done.. I live south of the boder so everything is cheaper..

yea it definetely shouldnt take that long BUT... these shops go by chargable rate... they see what the computer tells them it will take and thats what they charge. and mostly everyone uses the same system so every shop will tell u more or less the same price.
they dont charge u how long it actually takes them, they charge by the amount of hours the system tells them it will take. so taking that into concideration, i think its a fair price. knowing that u can do it urself in 15 minutes, lol thats a whole-nuther story.
do u guys know how much the rate is for changing the starter in an sc400??? 8 hours.... thats almost $800.00 i called about 15 shops and they all told be between 600-800 to do the job... i bought the starter and did it myself... that doesnt mean that the shops are trying to rip u off, thats just what they charge.
Ummm it's NOT an easy job unless you have a lift. I had a lot of bolts that were completely seized and had to be cut by Lexus. Also, Lexus noticed my front subframe was bent slightly and was causing me to lose my alignment rapidly. Glad I took it to them and had it done by people who notice little things like that because they see our cars all the time.
it's not an easy job, but it's pretty damn straightforward and very doable even on jackstands. mark the dials before you take your arms off (or not, your alignment's probably gona change anyway), get a pitman puller for the ball joints, and use heat on seized bolts. Only problem I ran into when i did mine was that the brackets on the subframes that held onto the lca's had bent in towards each other so I couldn't get the arms in/out until i banged/pried the brackets straight.
yea u know thats why i said take it somewhere... lol how many times have u guys started somehing and realized it was a pita? then ur like, sh * T too late now... gotta finish it.
i hate when that happens, thats why i usually always take my car in. i dont like being frustraded. plus there is a lake right behind my house so i sometimes contimplate driving it iin there and be done with it.lol
It was an easy job for me and if you can change a shock then you can change the lca however if you live in the rust belt then I could see this becoming a problem job.
