Steering shaft clunking when going over bumps???
I am trying to track down a clunking sound coming from my driver side front on my SC4. It started 3 days ago, when I hit bumps I can hear something jarring loose in the front on the drivers side. I have jacked the car up and visually inspected everything - it looks fine. I shook down the front end - ball joints, tie rods, sway bar......everything is tight. I grabbed the rack&pinion and tried to shake it - its solid too. Oh and a year ago I installed the complete F&R Prothane bushing kit.
This morning I popped the hood and grabbed the steering shaft right where it comes out from the firewall and I can jiggle it back and forth. IIRC this should be nice and solid - not loose.
My question is......can someone grab their steering shaft right where it exits the firewall and see if its loose? If it is not supposed to be this way, is it most likely a bushing that have deteriorated? Thanks.
