Default Talk to me about Coilover Spring Rates!

What spring rates should I get for a slightly firmer ride then stock... only slightly firmer?

12K 10K?
10K 8K ?
8K 6K too soft?

I know nothing about spring rates, help a brotha out!

I got a set of BC coilovers for my IS AWD and they were a bit firmer. Its F-10k, and R-8k. Wouldn't F-12k be too stiff? There is no more nose dive during braking after the coilovers installed.

I have 10-8 on my BC racing and its very close to stock, a tad firmer but just as comfortable and better handling since there is less lean...... actually this is my full opinion:

i also have BC Racing Coil with 10kF and 8kR. The ride is good IMO and not that bouncy either.

16K/14K ?!?!? Whoaaa!! I'll keep that in mind but this is just for daily driver/street driving... from what I gather, 16K/14K is super stiff, no?

How do they compare (probably going to get the same coilovers) to your prevous Eibach suspension? Firmer then the Eibach's? My wife has Eibach's on her IS so I'm familiar with that type of a ride.

Mine are 13F/8R and it rides great. Stiffer than stock obviously, but not to the point where it is annoying.

just to revisit, I got my BC Racing coils installed (10k/8k) and I'm at the same ride height I was at with my H&R Springs. I'm now rubbing when I didn't before. That and the ride feels a bit more floaty, leading me to believe 10K/8K is just too soft for me. Thinking about bumping it up to 12K/10K...

I've played with the dampening from fully hard to fully soft and everything in between. While fully hard does help a little, I still rub. That and its a pretty darn rough ride. Hoping the stiffer springs will help out a little so I can keep hte dampeing a tad bit looser....

any thoughts?

My thoughts or IMO, this kind of adjustment is really not the preferred way to deal with tire rubbing.

Its certainly a step in the right direction after you've maxed out everything else.

Problem: Rubbing occurs ONLY when car moves up and down
Solution: Decrease up/down movment by stiffening suspension

I've already rolled, heatgunned, cut away, slapped silly and gave dirty looks at my fender's and fender liner. I even tried to make nice with them and come to a truce... no luck though.

Moving the wheels in and raising the car IS NOT an option

decrease movment is

Decreasing suspension travel only means more of the contact force is being absorbed by the wheel before going into the chassis, any bumps you were able to take before will probably destroy your wheels if you take them again

^ I'll keep that in mind, but I think you may have a slight misunderstanding here... I'm only talking about bumping up the spring rate to 12k/8k... which by many respects is pretty soft.

I'm not changing my suspension to a MAC Truck here...

Well spring rates are measures in lbs per inch... so you want an increase in 2000 lbs of resistance per inch of compression per spring. I said what I said cuz that's forces in which we dont experience physically everyday here :/

People who usually run the aggressive setup like yours rub till no tomorrow, I would think its a pretty futile game trying make it not rub. Go any car meets and you will see those VIP folks have ripples running up their fenders from the rub.

Also, you mention your H&R's dont rub, and you said at the hardest setting your coils do.... well are the BC coils the same length as OEM coil setup? are the spring mount points and spring lengths the same as the BC coils? If not, then you're probably gonna sacrifice a lot of comfort to achieve the H&R's non rubness.

This is all mechanical, you can not cross compare unless all the specs and measurements of the OEM shock + H&R is the same as the BC coils. Just a warning so you are ready for the sacrifices
