Advice on New Shocks
I recently bought a 2001 GS300 for my wife to replace her 1997 ES300.
The GS has about 46k miles on it and I assume that the shocks need replacing.
I had new 17" wheels and tires installed. I also assume that the 225-50-17 may make the car ride a little harder than with stock wheels and tires, 215-60-16.
What I am asking is for advice on what route to take. Maybe just getting new shocks from the dealer, will do it.
As much as I would like to lower the car, I don't think it will work out.

if you think the ride is still ok, then you do not need to replace your shocks yet.
46k miles and 2001 do not sound too bad, good chance that your shocks are still in good condition.

Hi cap, seems like you have 2 issues:
First, the mileage is still low, so the shocks should still be good like what others mentioned. No need to change if they're still good, not bouncing up and down like a low rider over little dips and bumps
2nd, when you swap to the 50 series versus the 60's, you are lowering it slightly already because of the sidewall height Of course, the ride will be very slightly stiffer. However, I would probably go 55's instead.
