Default Problem with rear callipers, please help!!

I was driving my car the other day and when i was coming to a stop i heard a loud noise coming from the rear, sounded like my pads were down to the metal. So i figured id get new pads and swap them and be done with it, but when i took the calliper off the rotor i noticed that only the outer pad was down to the metal, but the inner pad was almost as good as the brand new one! Its the same way on both sides in the rear. I have no idea what would cause that to happen, my only guess is the inner piston locked up and the outer one is doing all the work. If anybody had a similar problem, please post with some info on what the problem was and how it can be fixed before i go out and buy new callipers!
