Time to replace valve cover gaskets - question
My '08 with 123K miles has been leaking oil for about a year or so (at least that's when I noticed - confirmed by mechanic that did an O2 sensor). My mechanic quoted me $300 for labor (both sides) plus cost of parts. To take any uncertainty out of the total cost, I told him I'll provide all parts needed for the job.
So.... I know I'll need both gaskets (Lexus part numbers 11214-38020 and 11214-38030). Is there anything else that I should provide for him? I guess it wouldn't hurt to replace the fuel pump gaskets as well? Anything else I'm missing?
TIA

I did mine at home but $300 for labor for both sides seems like a great deal. And yes, replace both fuel pump gaskets while you're in there because you have to remove the fuel pump to get the valve cover gaskets off. When replacing the fuel pump gaskets, there are other rubber rings that need to be replaced as well. good luck!

When I spoke to him, it sounded like he knew exactly what was involved. He’s an owner of a large body/mechanic shop, so one of his mechanics would do the job. Last year I got a quote of $450-$500 for the job from someone else.

Got the car back. Turned out to be both fuel pump gaskets. Total bill came in at even $400 - parts and labor. In that price, they gave me a rental for couple days. Overall, not too bad. Around the time I noticed the leak, I also noticed a slight “growl” around 2k rpm. After the fix, the growl is gone, so it’s a “2-fer”. Let’s hope this puppy lasts (without any major problems) another 120k+ miles.
