Default What to buy from Japan?

i go to Japan quite regularly for work, and am just about to buy an SC300 (picking up when I return). As being as I am going to be there, I could buy some things and have them shipped to the office ready for me to pick up and take home.

What are some nice little parts and accessories that are only available in Japan that I can look at getting when I am there.

Hopefully nothing huge as I want to fit it in my luggage.

I was thinking maybe a nicer steering wheel for example.

Someone did suggest a 6 speed Supra manual transmission but I think that will put me over my luggage weight limit.

coilovers can be had for relatively cheap and you should have a lot to choose from. it should fit in your standard carry-on luggage lol

Look for xJZ motor oil caps.
Look for Toyota manual transmission shiftknobs

As for random stuff that people tend to want but can't get: Emblems and stickers. These don't have to be Soarer, or even Toyota specific. For example, Top Secret and ARC decals. You know those little italian looking flag decals that ARC used to sell for like $3.99 USD? Those go for $30.00 USD each in the ARC groups on facebook.

Car books are cool! Look for any historical car books published by the "Grafis Mook" company (aka Grafis co., Ltd). They sell one for the entire Soarer series covering every model since 1981 until the Z40 (SC430) was rebranded as a Lexus.

The title of that book is "Soarer". Japanese characters follow it. The publishing date is 2014 and the ISBN number is 978-4-86493-123-6. The back of mine says it retailed 2381 Yen or about $21.

Other than specialty book shops (or maybe a Super Autobacs store?) I'm sure a huge book store in the Shibuya district in Tokyo would carry just about everything... assuming you will spend any leisure time at all in Tokyo during your trip.

Edit: I just checked the original shopping bag this book left the store with (in Tokyo I think... it was a gift someone got me) and the shop was called "Grease - Garage Shop: Foreign+ Domestic Books and Models". Then below that, "History Garage 2F, Mega Web". Telephone for them is 03-3599-0601.

So I guess any car book and car model shops would carry interesting things like this.

There is also postal shipping out any sizable very special car part you bought for yourself because it was too good to pass up There is Fedex but also Japan Post with tracking is pretty good

Id hit the smaller tuner shops and gets some of the cooler swag and little things that are hard to find over here. Id look for rarer Soarer parts. Id scour junkyards. I used to stop by an engine importer in VA and theyd have cuts off cars thatd have all the tuner parts attached and they had no idea they held any value.

See if you could pick up a digital cluster out of a Soarer, maybe a junkyard find, or the really rare carbon parts only produced there like front and rear fender flares, and or style spoiler, coilovers, real TRUST parts (Greddy in America) but a little cooler I.M.O. being from origin.

I haven't been able to find them here in the states but my buddy got a set of half-gull-wing door hinges for his SC400. They came from some auto styling shop in Japan, not sure where tho, I'll see if he remembers. His doors open like a McLaren now! Books was for sure a good suggestion.

Best of luck on your hunt. Update this thread with pics of some glom when you get some. I'm sure there are plenty of interested people on here to see what all you can snag.

Try to get some griffin badges. Toyota discontinued them and they are hard to find online now.

Pick up some aftermarket parts suppliers catalogs. Say maybe from Sankei-555 or others.
