Question for those who buy 1 gal. or 5 qt jugs of oil when doing their oil changes. I bought two 5 qt. jugs of Mobil 1 EP and did my oil change last weekend. I poured .2 quart out into a spare empty container and emptied what's left into the crankcase. After warming up and letting the oil settle for a few minutes, I checked the level and it's about 3/8" above the top dimple. Is it overfilled? Were the volume in the new oil containers not accurate? Or 9.8 quarts should be over the top dimple on the dipstick? Thanks!
By the way, I used 9-quarts and I was GTG...And thats w/a Oil filter too...
Please, validate your units...
Sounds like over fill to me...

LOL, yes I know 1 gal. is 4 qts. I just mentioned both bulk containers that are available. Sorry if my info is confusing. Again, I bought two 5 quart jugs, poured out .2 qt from one of the containers, and poured what’s left (9.8 qts) into the crankcase. But, after measuring with the dipstick, it’s 3/8” above the top dimple. So you are putting .8 qt less than factory spec capacity, where is your level as indicated by the dipstick? Thanks!
The container has the right amount of oil. It’s a well known fact that 9.8 quarts will overfill the engine. Do a quick search and you will see most owners had overfill cases from the dealer (happened to me 3 times). I believe the correct amount is 9.2 quarts with a filter change

Maybe there are still some old oil in the engine/crankcase/reservoir that can't be drained out?

cuz you cant get every drop of oil in the engine drained. If I had to fill a 9.8 capacity I always round down and intially fill with 9.0 even, then you check oil level and top off as needed

This is how I’ve always done it. This last time was the first that I got 5 qt containers and did the re-fill the way I did. I guess I just never really kept track of how much I put before, I just top off after warming up with 9 qts.
So anyway, I just loosened the filter housing and drained out about half a quart and now it’s at the top dimple of the dipstick.
My experience is that for an oil and filter change, adding 8.8 L (9.29 US liquid quarts) will put the oil level EXACTLY on the top dimple of the dip stick.
Assumptions: car must be level, allow old oil to drain fully, after fill up warm up car wait at least 5 min check level on dip stick.
I always take time when draining old oil. While we all know we can’t really get rid of every drop of old
oil, but I make sure the oil filter housing is completely drained, that’s easy. And then I leave the pan drain plug out while front of car is up on ramps. I wait a good bit of time til hardly any oil comes out.
I just didn’t know that the 9.8 qts spec. in the factory manual is actually too much. Now I know it’s 9.3. Thanks for all the responses!
