That's the piece that's needed on my Tundra to open the valve to drain the oil inside the filter before unscrewing the filter cap. They work beautifully. However, since our filters are mounted horizontally instead of vertically, the RC-F does not have that valve and it is not needed.

This is the oil the Lexus HQ specifies in the service manual. Yes? No? If NO, why not?

youre stuck with it until the next time you change the oil. No reason you cant change to another oil brand or viscosity.

Well just because the manual says to use 5W30 doesn't make it the best grade for you.

Leander, I haven't tested the TRD filter, I suppose you could test it for us and show us your results. Problem is like with WIX, many filters are underrated and many are overrated. It's impossible to tell without UOA. UOA is like the drag strip for oil.

Even at the drag strip, you gotta also be able to read numbers and make sense of where you can improve, sometimes better numbers can be deceiving. If any of you are in the GT-R scene, you'll know AMS dropped the power on their car in exchange for mid range torque, they figured out their trap speed at 201+ was too fast and they needed to make mid range gains to get into the 6 second quarter miles. They ended up trapping much lower speeds but got into the 6's. A perfect example why sometimes, things that appear better on paper, don't always turn out that way.

Well, thanks to this thread I've gone with RLI 85333 and a WIX 57041XP. I guess after 5000 miles I'll have to put some of it in this free TRLK sample kit and see what it looks like.

If any of you are in the GT-R scene, you'll know AMS dropped the peak power on their car in exchange for more mid range power torque, they figured out their trap speed at 201+ was too fast and they needed to make mid range gains to get into the 6 second quarter miles. Modified for truth.

Torque means nothing. Horsepower is everything, and getting more area under the curve is what makes a better run. The fundamental key to success is getting the engine producing the most power during the entire run. All the gearing is there to help (or hurt) you do this. None of this is rocket science if you understand the physics involved. Curiously, a good friend and I went around and around on this subject, and while it is difficult to abandon the paradigms we hold near and dear, the truth is, whatever gearing you have that allows you to keep the engine producing the most power over a run is going to be faster than anything else. So, if you build an engine like the Hellcat where the torque "curve" is flat from near idle to redline, you've really screwed yourself because there is no useful shift point at all. You have to shift at redline and suffer because you can't get as much power as you were getting at redline.

There is a whole lot more to this, but fundamentally, they didn't "reduce power" they reduced peak power to get more power after the shift. Essentially, move the peak lower to take advantage of the available gearing and shift points. In moving the peak lower, they lost their peak number, but gained area under the power curve so there was more power available for more of the run to make the car quicker.

Daniel,
Here's my reports back from tribologik. Can you pls decipher. Much thanks!

I look forward to any and all constructive comments on how long I can stretch out the oci, the oil choice, oil filter choice, air filter choice, etc.

There are two reports:
One is clean new "standard" royal purple 5W30 tested for a base line.
Second is used oil that was only in my car for 1600 miles with 2 track weekends (about 200 miles on track), within that 1600 total miles.
I will say the reports look very similar so I'm guessing not much happened to the oil during the short oci ?
Engine had approx 11k miles when the sample was taken.
Oil filter was Toyota oem.
Air filter used is K&N that was installed since about 7000 miles so it has been filtering for 4000 miles. I have since taken it out to clean and re-oiled.

(Note: in the used oil report, there are some Mobil 1 mixed in with the royal purple. During track days, I loose about 1/2 a quart of oil per day and I top it off with Mobil 1. That's because I only have royal purple in the big jugs and it's just easier to bring the quart size Mobil 1 to the track. I would say a total of 1.5 quarts Mobil 1 max is mixed in. )
