Default Used car values

We are considering changing (I won't say upgrading!) our 2008 Pebble Beach with around 80k miles to a LC 500. I realllyyy want another hard top convertible but I would rather have a soft top and stay with Lexus than buy a Mercedes, BMW, or Audi to get a hard top...

Anyway, for fun, I put my car info into Vroom, their cash offer is a little less than $17k. Higher than I expected!

If anyone is thinking of selling/trading - check out Vroom!

I don’t know your SC condition, but if she well kept and maintained, you could get much higher offer.
I’d say 20k+.

I think $17K is low given what I see on places like Facebook Marketplace.

Also, no idea about TN laws, but in Florida if you trade in at the dealer you buy from, you can deduct the trade-in value from the purchase price for sales tax purposes. Where I live a $17K trade-in would be a $1190 credit toward sales tax owed on the LC500.

If true in TN, the sale of your SC to anyone else would have to cover the offset for loss of the sales tax deduction..

I sold my car to Vroom when I got my Lexus. It was an Acura ILX with 50k and they just about gave me retail for it.
I'd say checkout carmax.com / carvana.com / vroom.com, you get an instant offer from all of them.
See who does the best!

From my experience in CA where we don't have a sales tax credit for sales tax owed on a trade-in, one is always better to sell one's vehicle privately vs unloading it on Carmax, Carvanna, Vroom, or as a trade-in at a dealer. I seem to be in the minority of people willing to do this, but I was raised this way and have found many ways to simplify/streamline the process over the years. For those unwilling to do this, you are simply leaving relatively large sums of money on table in exchange for the convenience offered by dealers. Nothing is free!

We have been thinking we would get "around" $14k for trade - before I realized values had changed so much- a little more for a private sale, so this offer is a good one. My state doesn't collect sales tax on trade value, so that's a factor also.

I agree with Wilson totally. I'm 75 years young and I have never traded a car. I always sell privately and 99 % of the time I buy privately. However, if you don't have the time, selling and buying skills, or money to burn that's a different matter.

Trust me, if you can get $14K trade-in value, you can get more than a "little more for a private sale..." My guess is you can get 15-20% more, but the only way to find out is to list it for $16.5K and see if you get any bites.

I will squeeze every penny when it's time to part ways with my car!
What’s happened with 17K?

Condition, condition, condition, miles, model year in that order is what a used car is worth.

if it looks like a showroom new car in every aspect then the std values can be disregarded.

Our 08 is a 90+% condition car. Paint touch up and at new oem windshield and at detail it could be in new condition.

Too expensive to restore a lexus to that kind of condition in my experience.

Things like headlights and seat leathers.

Blue book says values shown are for fully reconditioned cars other than the speedo miles.

if it looks new in every aspect and smells new its worth a lot more. Alot

I just picked up my '07 on Tuesday. The dealer indicated that prices were escalating as the cars have become desirable of late.

A '02 was driving up as I was about to leave and he said he paid nearly as much for the '02 as he did for my '07.

He indicated he got over a dozen inquiries on my car after I put the deposit down.

The cars are hot right now, so don't undervalue yours.

Gotcha Listed for $25k. I think that's fair

That's an offer from Vroom/Carmax, etc. I have it listed for $25k. I think that is fair market value

Yep, you're right about it. I would also recommend to find some good and reliable online resources like one I know here called DriveAxis. This resource is maybe one of the most reliable ones I know, and every time when I need to estimate the price of my car, I always use their online calculations for that.

Out of curiosity, I entered my car details into Vroom, and to my surprise, their cash offer stands slightly below $17,000. It exceeds my initial expectations, which is quite pleasing.
With all due respect, that's prolly $10k light for that car assuming it's in good condition. Have you asked your Lexus dealer what they would give you on trade in? The plus on a trade-in is it's that much money you don't pay sales tax on for the new car.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

I have the same 08 pb and I agree you maybe $10k low. Condition is key.
