Techstream & Skid Control ECU
Hi all,
I have an '02 with 137k miles and the skid control module issue (ABS and BRAKE lights on, speedometer and odometer not working, and stiff steering at low speeds). From what I've read on this forum, a few people had this issue and replaced the ECU which solved the problem. Before I go and do that, I was wondering if anyone who's had and fixed this problem hooked up their car to Techstream and got any codes?
When I run the ABS/VSC/TRC ECU health check in Techstream (v. 12.10.019 and cable has firmware 1.4.1), I get the following error: "Selected system is not responding or not available. Please check the repair manual for applicable systems." Is this consistent with what others were seeing when they had skid control issues and ran techstream? If the ECU is fried, it would make sense that it's not communicating with techstream. I just thought there might be a stored code. For comparison, I'm able to run a health check on the other ECUs successfully (except for the Tire Monitor, I get error 0x91020324 but that's probably because my TPMS light is on and the sensors are not working).
Also, for those who successfully fixed the issue by replacing the skid control module, did you just unplug the negative battery cable, swap ECUs, and hook the negative back and that's it? I read someone said no reprogramming is necessary while another said it has to be "calibrated." I'm planning to get a used ECU off ebay.

No codes. First, I had Autozone run their scanner: no codes. Then I purchased the mini VCI cable and installed techstream. The Engine ECU has no active codes (historical codes are unrelated) and when I run the scan on the ABS/VSC/TRC ECU, I get the not responding or not available error as mentioned in my original post.
I agree with you that no codes probably mean a bad ECU. As far as I recall you can just "plug and play" it but then you have to either calibrate the steering wheel. Pretty much what you posted in your original post.
The one thing I might check for is a bad fuse to the ECU, or possibly a loose connection.

Replying to them makes things a lot harder for the moderators, because then we have to go in and also prune or edit replies that quote the spammer, etc. because the link is then propagated there too! Just report it and we'll take care of the rest.
Daryl got it. Please just use the little report a post icon (triangle with exclamation point in it) and the moderator team will come in and review suspicious posts like these.

Now I will know better

UPDATE: Purchased a used ECU from a local supplier, installed it, got the VSC and VSC off lights, did a reset and calibration through Techstream. All symptoms gone, all lights off, and car drives as it should. Just wanted to post the conclusion to my issue, hopefully this helps someone out.

BTW, we weren't talking about your post. An automated computer system was replying to your original post, but only with nonsensical phrases. DaveGS got rid of the "BOT" but did not delete our references to it.
HEY, That's great! Glad you got your problem resolved and thanks for the update. It is so frustrating when you find people with the same problem, but not the solution.

Oh ok, I wasn’t sure if you thought my reference to the version number was an IP address lol.
I am having the same issue. Does anyone know if the skid control from the 06-10 will work in an 02? They changed the part numbers but the 2 parts look identical.
02-05 89540-24170
06-10 89540-24210
The newer ones are way cheaper, and maybe they are improved? Thanks in advance

The one exception is if I went to an official Lexus parts website (like a dealer) and they say "this part is discontinued and has been replaced with this part"
A skid ECU is kinda risky to get wrong. You won't know until you are in a skid and that is a terrible time to find out you saved a few $$$$'s and now you are gonna die from it.
