As you know I had to buy new rims for the SC. Well today I took tire number 2 in to have the rim changed out. They called me while I was at the cigar shop (it is Monday) and said the TPMS feel apart while taking it out of the old rim. They asked what type of car it was going on and I told them a 2006 Lexus SC 430. They said fine that they have TPMS for Lexus and would replace it no charge. When I picked the tire and rim up they said it may need to be reprogramed and that if it did just bring the car in and they would do it no charge. So I am thinking on the way home I may have to drag out the Techstream laptop and cable and give it ago. Well I get home reinstall the tire (left front) get in the SC and start it up looking for the light and nothing? So if it was a TPMS for Lexus would the system see the new one communicate and determine on it's own that it was good to go without being reprogramed? Now I have not driven it because I moved on to the next tire however I did start the SC several time looking for the TPMS light and nothing.

No, it will not see it and program itself.

 

Maybe the tire and old sensor haven't been off long enough to trigger the warning light, yet. The good news is, you have the 2006-2010 model with the new/improved TPMS that any tire shop can program. It is my understanding the earlier models had to be programed via Techstream, so most tire shops couldn't assist with this.

 

Sensors changed in 07 not 06. I know, I have an 06 and it has the old color coded sensors.

 

Dennis, you can check all sensors using TechStream. You can see the pressure and voltage if the sensors communicate with the SC.

Yes I know but I am doing 1 wheels a day and will wait until all 4 wheels are done before hooking up the laptop. How's retirement treating you?

Dennis, retirement is better than I expected, thanks for asking. Got a chance to do lots of things for the house and yard. Nothing for the SC though, as she still sitting in the garage looking pretty. I try to drive her at least on the weekends to keep her in good shape.

 

Well I broke out the laptop and techstream today before taking wheel number 4 off and the system will only register 3 wheels so I am guessing the TPMS used to replace the Gold one they broke on wheel 2 is not going to work. I will wait and speak with them tomorrow to make sure no problems with wheel number 4 before ordering a replacement

The new sensors need to be registered. I have not done it but I think it’s straight forward with TechStream.

I tried that and I Techstream would only see and try to register 3 wheels. I am guessing that was the 3 wheels with the OEM TPMS's?

I'd be nervous if a tire shop said they had a TPMS for my '06 (and the specific color I needed). Were you able to verify they put in the right sensor and color?

Dennis, without seeing your TechStream screen, I do not understand your issue. May be BGW or others can help. Why don’t you wait until all 4 wheels installed then tell us what’s going on. May be you don’t have to do anything.

 

Hi Dennis, please review the pics in the this thread. TechStream will clearly show you the status of each colored sensor.
if Gold shows something off the chart or nothing at all, then they installed the incorrect sensor.
i just checked Rockauto and they list Denso and Schrader as two that make the colored sensors for the 2002-2006 model years. I would stick with OEM Denso. The other cheaper sensors they be an error and are compatible with the 2007-2010 models.

Yep already on top of it. With my discount the parts comes out at $67.05 plus shipping for the gold Denso from Rockauto. I am waiting until later today to order to make sure there are no issues with wheel number 4. Can you believe Megizip wanted $153.54 for that sensor? Have been ordering parts from Megizip for Steve's 05 SC. Now they are sending it Fedx express for the same shipping cost because it was taking so long for the postal packages to get on a flight. The Rockauto cost was the best. MLP: 89.46, Monster Lexus Parts: $76.21 and Megizip was off the charts. Going to try and get the tire shop to eat half of the sensor cost as their guy is the one who broke it.

A Discount Tire tech tried to use a generic TPS also which wouldn't work. Once I got them to admit what happened, they replaced it with OEM and it worked. My guess is the mechanic used a generic sensor.
